My Nightly Skincare Routine

I have always been a girl who loves a product. From the magic scent of Love's Baby Soft to the perfect hot pink Mac Lip Glass and every must have magic cream all the editors of Vogue love, I am into it. I used to try it all (at the same time) and wait for the magic to happen like it does on the smooth skinned celeb that was raving about it. But my skin gave me a big wake up call a couple years ago by giving me something called Dermatitis (a lovely face rash that would not budge) and I had to do a clean sweep and reevaluate my beauty product obsession.

My dermo put me on a skincare product diet, which I am not going to lie was painful. Nothing but the simplest of products and no make up for a month. And as I very slowly started adding in a product here or there I noticed my skin was MUCH better than when I was using the entire anti-aging section at Sephora. My A-ha Moment! I do not need all the things. I just need a few and my skin wants to be a minimalist. Lesson learned.

The edited products I use now are my tried and true. I would give them all 5 star reviews and have bought them many times over. Some are pricey, but this is a high/low mixed list as I have found that a higher the price tag does not mean it is going to actually work. This is my nighttime routine and I will share my other product suggestions soon! And make sure to follow me on Instagram and LiketoKnow.it, I will keep posting videos and tips!

Step 1: Cleanse
CeraVe is the brand my dermo recommends and I worship it. I use the foaming cleanser when I have worn make up and the hydrating if I have not.

Step 2: Treat
I sometimes skip this step all together using one of these only 2-3 times a week.
I use a retinol serum to combat fine lines. This is a MUST people!
Or this SKii essence which is basically magic water that makes your skin glow. No really, it reverses all signs of aging.
Or a spritz of refreshing rose water feels like heaven after a long day.
Or I use this crazy good hydrating sleep mask. It is a K Beauty product with a mass following. You wake up with baby soft skin and calmed redness.

Step 3: Hydrate
Forget all those $300 creams, ladies. This drugstore CeraVe lotion is chock full of peptides and hydrolaunic acid that plump up skin and keep it soft.

Step 4: Do Not Forget the Neck
You can certainly just use what you are using on your face on your neck and chest, but I recommend a specialized one to really work on those lines and prevent as much jaw sagging as possible. Neck wrinkles are kind of my new obsession to combat, I know weird, but you will thank me later.

Step 5: Eye Cream
If you do not use eye cream, you're nuts. The skin is so delicate and shows age so quickly. I swear by this one. Worth every single penny! One pump a night is all you need. Tap it all underneath, on the sides, and your lids.

Step 6: Eye Mask
I live for my eye mask and weirdly cannot sleep without now. I like it because it blocks any light that may disturb my beauty rest. Including electronics or phones you might have in your room. It also helps prevent pillow lines on your face and this one has anti-aging properties that work on those eyes all night.

Let me know any questions you have about these products or skin care in general!

Current Favorites

How is Fall going, friends? Sinking into spiced everything and a possible scarf well? We have been on a bit of a whirlwind which has not let me enjoy the season as much I would like, but I plan on making the best of it while it lasts. An extra afternoon coffee spiked with cinnamon and getting cozy with the kids before bed are helping me remember it is Fall. Here are some other things that are helping make my days brighter...

1. Love these Sorel boots I just got. They also come in blue, coral, and brown and gray
2. I use quite a few of the Glossier products, but this new cover up they make is by far my favorite right now. Melts into your skin, perfect for under eyes and hides redness around the nose.
3. I have become an almond milk snob and I am not even lactose intolerant. I just LOVE this toasted coconut almond milk so much in my dirty chai in the morning. I wake up early to make it instead of going to Starbucks.
4. My kids have had these magnetic drawing lap pads for years, but all the sudden they are the shining stars of the toy collection. Keeps them busy!
5. If you have not discovered the Wet Brush yet for yourself and any possible little heads in your house, get one. A light touch gets even the nastiest tangles out.
6. I have not been buying too many new skin products lately since my revelation, but I have been insistently using this Honest Beauty Magic Balm. Obviously it is great on lips, but it is also great on cuticles, eye lids (for a bit of shine), and any dry patches. Plus, it is pretty.
7. Almost done reading this tear jerker. Can't wait to see the movie.
8. In the mood to make this smokey, healthy but hearty, Turkey Sausage and Lentil Soup this week.
9. Every Fall I end up going back for another pair of these flats. The perfect shape and it comes in such great colors.

Glossier

If you are a fan of Into the Gloss (which if you love beauty products, add to your daily reads), then you probably saw that the founder of the site launched her own skin care line called Glossier. The girl literally writes about all things beauty and interviews everyone from Karlie Kloss to Kate Bosworth on what products they use for those flawless faces. So you have got to think that when developing her own line she really had done her homework.

They have launched the brand with four products and an affordable price point and so far I love them. the packaging on its own is so simple and pretty, and the products themselves are very simple and make you feel pretty. So basically a huge win. The priming moisturizer of a thin, but powerful product that really plumps the skin. You are supposed to layer so someone with dry skin can really lay in on thick, while an oily skinned person can start with just a dab. Emily is all about the dewy skin look, which really does make you look younger in my opinion, so I like that "glossier" look.

The face tint comes in three shades (I got medium) and it is just a hint of color to even out skin tone while still maintaining that "I woke up like this" natural look that I so covet right now.

The rose water spray is refreshing and great to start your day, refresh yourself for an afternoon pick me up, or even at the end of the day to relax a bit. It would be perfect on a plane flight. And speaking of plane flights, the products are delivered in the cutest pink bubble wrapped quart sized bags to really up your travel game.

And rounding the pack out is the Balm Dotcom. It plumps lips, moisturizes dry cuticles and fingers, and can be used on anything that needs some love. At $80 for the full suite, I would say your money is being well spent (you can buy products a la carte as well) and these products will be in your rotation in no time.

Have you tried any of the products? Let me know what you think.

Summer Line Up

I have such a love hate relationship with the sun. There is nothing better than its warm soft rays on bare skin in these summer months, but the lines in my face and the spots on my arms remind me of its ugly side. With not a lot of time each morning, I need easy products to moisturizer, cover and correct easily. Here is my morning routine.

1. Splash face with cold water. I heard about this from Giada and she looks pretty damn good.

2. I mix a couple of drops of Vitamin C serum with Kate Sommerville Serum Sunscreen and slather on. This is the lightest, non-greasy sunscreen I have tried. I add a little more Vitamin C because why not? (the Sommerville serum can be hard to find, this Super Goop option is a good one too)

3. Dab on a little Kinerase C8 Peptide Under Eye Treatment. This can be used day and night and seems to have tightened things up a bit.

4. I squirt one pump of Make Up For Ever HD Foundation into a scoop of Algenist Regenerative Anti-Aging Moisturizer. It gives me just enough coverage to not have to wear anything else and keeps my skin moisturized all day without being oily. The Algenist was a great find I was talked into by a woman at Sephora, I am on my second pot which says a lot because of my product hoarding problem.

If I am lucky, I have time for my 3 minute make up routine, but most days I skip that. Feeling a bit more confident in my skin these days since the hormonal acne has calmed down after babies and these products seem to actually be doing the work they claim to do. Shocking. ha

What do you swear by in the summer? Would love to hear.

Retinol Remedy

As someone who is over 30 and well on her way to regretting every minute I spent in the sun (and tanning bed! yuck), I am always searching for the best ways to reverse all the bad I did. Serums and potions line my bathroom counter like soldiers fighting a war on the front line. Or at least my forehead lines. And though I do not know the secret to erasing anything, I have been following the simple advice of sunscreen all day, retinol at night. Have you tried retinol yet?

I was prescribed it in the form of Ziana for my acne (is there anything worse than trying to fight wrinkles and acne? Somehow it feels super unfair), but have been trying other over the counter formulas. Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that has shown to regenerate cells, smooth lines, fade dark marks, and prevent new ones.

And because I am such a sucker for a celebrity endorsement, my latest retinol experiment comes straight from the recommendation of Miss Jessica Alba.  Her favorite facialist, Shani Darden, has developed a retinol serum to wear at night. Resurface by Shani Darden. After stalking Alba's perfect skin, I had to try it.

This product contains lactic acid as well, which helps keep your skin moisturized and makes it more possible for people with sensitive skin to use it. Retinol can be hard on your skin, many experience redness, so you should start using any retinol sparingly and work up to every night. I do not even use it every night, giving my skin a break a couple times a week.

I highly recommend this retinol. It is pricey, not going to lie, but worth it for the punch it packs. The day after using it things always look a bit better and brighter.

If you are looking for something from the drugstore, try Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair Night Moisturizer. Really fantastic, has retinol in it, and works on all your skin problems all at once.

What retinol products have you used that you love? You know I will go out and buy it immediately. ha

Summer Beauty Finds

In the ever endless search for the perfect beauty products, I have come across a few new items that I feel are worth sharing. I have been blessed with much better skin this pregnancy (last time was a full acne catastrophe) and have been testing some new, gentler products with less ingredients that are suspect for the baby.

From Left:

Ole Henriksen Truth Creme Advanced Hydration : While this cream gives great hydration, it is not greasy at all. It has kind of a funky smell (orange and vanilla), but there is definitely a brightness to my skin after using this at night. I rotate moisturizers at night, so I slather this on probably three times a week.

Lancome Artliner Eye Liner: I have used this sporadically for a long time, but recently fell back in love with it. I tend to just use liner, if I wear it at all, on the upper water line (between eye and lashes) and this is really easy to apply and to correct with a cotton swab.

Make Up for Ever HD Foundation: Searching for the perfect foundation that covers, blends well, and does not look like a mask is super hard. I am really loving this product though and use it with a Beauty Blender for just the right amount of coverage. It has just enough coverage to hide all those imperfections, but your skin still shows through.

Josie Maran Organic Argan Oil: This has been the best surprise purchase so far. My skin breaks out so easily, so using oil as a moisturizer is scary. But I LOVE this moisturizer. I use it day or night and my skin is so soft and not greasy at all. Which is weird since it is pure oil.

What have you tried lately that you love? I am such a product junkie, I need to know your secrets.

Style Snapshot: Ashley

As one of the founding partners of NEAT Method, Ashley Murphy has seen a lot of closets, a ton of products, and figured out ways to keep things simple and well... neat! I am still amazed at what she was able to do in my home. This chic Chicago mama-to-be shares with us her personal style and her favorite things.

I am originally from Ohio, but have been a Chicago girl for quite some time now.  I actually left for a brief couple of years to live in San Francisco, but always knew I would be getting back to my Midwestern roots sooner or later.

Ashley & Molly

While in San Francisco I was lucky enough to meet Molly Graves, my now business partner and lifelong friend!  We successfully launched a professional organizing company, NEAT Method and are thrilled to be officially in the Windy City! We figured since San Francisco wasn’t enough, why not take on another city…possibly even two (Minneapolis is in the works…sshhh!!)

And…on top of getting settled back in Chicago and running NEAT, I should also probably mention I am expecting my first baby this October. Ahhhh!!! Luckily, Type A people do best with a full plate!

So given my current belly situation, I am fashionably inspired by anyone who can make                pregnancy look chic.  Unfortunately, the timing of my pregnancy has aligned with celebs such as Snooki. Sooo I’m trying my best to come up with outfits that don’t make me look like I’m giving birth to a full size human. I’ve always kept my style simple and might have a slight obsession with basics. I tend to purge things that I no longer wear, so therefore I hate buying things that are too trendy to last for more than a season. I guess it’s proof that I actually practice what I preach to our NEAT Method clients.

I can always find something to impulse buy at Roslyn and Krista K in Chicago. I never online shop, because why deal with the hassle of returns? I actually only own one pair of maternity clothes: a pair of J Brand 3411 Maternity Skinny Leg Jeans. I am just having the hardest time getting into the whole maternity clothes thing. However, I might be getting to the point that a size bigger isn’t going to work for my ever-expanding belly!

Like my wardrobe, I am also fairly simple in the makeup department. If you were to see what I sported in college, you would be thanking me for getting over the makeup obsession and going with a more “natural” look. I tend to typically throw on a little eye shadow and mascara, finished with some powder and blush and call it a day. For a night on the town, I will spice it up with some eyeliner and fun gloss.

My favorites are: Laura Mercier Buttercream eye shadow, Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill mascara, custom mineral powder by Nicole Jacob (a Chicago makeup artist that you must try if you live here), and a blush by her as well. Oh and my favorite gloss is Channel #84. That’s pretty much it though!

Turns out my skincare routine isn’t quite as simple as my wardrobe.  This might be where some of my OCD tendencies shine through. It basically stems from the fact that when I moved to SF, my skin completely changed and I officially had adult acne (did I mention that I’m a bit of a drama queen??). I immediately went into panic mode thinking I would never make any new friends looking this way, which is when I discovered the most amazing medical Aesthetician in the world, Kim from Skin Salvation. I followed her advice and my skin cleared up immediately.  With a few modifications, here is what she taught me and I literally do it every morning and every night. And yes, my friends and family make fun of me…but hey, at least I have friends now!
p Use a clean washcloth to wash your face every morning and every night. No really…a new one every time.
p Rub an ice cube all over your face after every wash. Yep…I really do this too.  And in fact, I think it feels amazing.
p In the a.m. – apply eye cream and SPF
p In the p.m. – apply eye cream and a moisturizer

My favorites are: SkinCeuticals Purifying Cleanse, Elta MD spf 45, A Natural Difference Phyto-Pumpkin Moisturizer, SkinCeuticals Eye Balm.

As for my fitness regime? Oh gosh…do we have to talk about fitness these days!? Does standing all day on the job for NEAT count as exercise? I never thought I would be the pregnant girl that couldn’t keep up with her regular fitness routine, but as it turns out…I just can’t. Without a baby on board, I typically am a runner and Pilates girl. For now however, let’s just call exercise on a good day: working, followed by some walking and light stretching.

And…my other interesting life choices…I swear by the Whole Foods on North Ave in Chicago.  It is the size of a small city, and I can get anything I could ever want all while enjoying a glass of wine!  Well, except in my current state…do you think a girl can grocery shop, carry a crying child, and hold a glass of wine all at the same time?  Lets hope so cause I’m only a few months away from doing so!

I’m mostly a vegetarian, but also not afraid to take a bite out of a burger from time to time. I don’t drink milk, only almond milk. I’m a little weird about taking vitamins and will only do so with a glass of juice. I also hate taking medicine, and avoid it at all costs.

If you are still reading this…I should consider you a friend! So, thank you!

Feel free to check out NEAT’s blog to learn more OCD habits!

Sunscreen with Staying Power (And Beauty)

While I should have shared this find earlier in the summer, it is never too late to find the perfect sunscreen. I have been a fan of Colorecience Sunforgettable SPF 30 brush for a few years now. What makes it great is that it is easy to apply, is a mineral powder and has insane staying power.

You simply work the powder onto the brush and buff all over your skin. It comes in a few colors and "clear" so you pick the coverage you want. If you choose a nude color, you will love the way it gives you a bit of coverage with no cakey effect.

When the package says "waterproof," it is usually followed by a laundry list of how it is really not. Honestly, the package says "very water resistant," and it is not lying. Water, sweat, heat, nothing will get this sunscreen to budge. It is a go-to for outdoor activities and comes in SPF 50 as well for all day exposure.

It does come with a hefty price tag, but a bottle lasts forever. I have had mine for two summers now. Colorescience also has other options for sunscreen mineral powder, including a loose powder you can use your own brush with.

Yet another way to keep the redness and wrinkles away. I love how products are getting smarter and actually make you look better when using them!

Weekend Wish: The Power of Iceland

To say my skin has been "acting out" recently would be a huge understatement. While I take measures to avoid breakouts according to the recommendations of my dermo, it seems that these strong products are not doing the trick.

My husband recently went to Iceland and brought back an Icelandic Silica Mud Mask from the Blue Lagoon. Like most people on the planet, I know next to nothing about Iceland except that they have hot springs. Which is where this magic mud is found.

So my wish is this weekend is that this magical mask calms my skin and brings me back to a face that does include pimples.

In my first attempts at this super silky mask, I did notice that it makes your skin uber-soft and from what it claims to do, detoxifies all of your pores. It begins in a creamy texture and then dries to a chalky layer that is easy to wash off.

The mask is hypoallergenic, free of colors and fragrance, and dermo tested. Here's to hoping that this mask can clear up and clean out my skin.

If you are looking for other ways to bring a little Iceland home, I have heard great things about the Skyn Iceland brand that uses ancient glacier waters in all of its products.

Have a great and fabulous skin filled weekend!

Style Snapshot: Julie

In our next profile, the lovely Julie shares with us her favorite products, labels, and fitness spots. She lives in Chicago (LP) and is the Director of Marketing at Saks Fifth Avenue. With a fun job like that, Julie is super busy and has to stay chic. Here are her secrets on how she keeps it all together.

'I am fortunate enough to work in one the most amazing luxury fashion houses, so shopping (fortunately and unfortunately!) comes easily.  When I travel, I love to shop--Paris, New York, how could you not?!  I recently was in the Hamptons and fell in love with all of the local boutiques.  It's fun to stumble upon things I couldn't find at home.  But in Chicago, of course, my go-to is Saks.  We house some of the best brands in the city, so it makes it hard to look elsewhere.  I have to say, I jump around from designer to department.  But my favorites right now are Yigal Azrouel and Pauw.  I also love Rag & Bone and Rebecca Taylor.  I love color and dresses and that's what it's all about this season!

I'm not a big jeans girl.  If I do wear them, I'm usually wearing the skinnys by J Brand.  And thankfully the wide-leg 1970s-inspired trousers are back this season.  I love utility-style pants.  I picked up a pair of army green Isabel Marant cargo-esque pants this season and wear them all the time - heels, flats, flip flops - it doesn't matter!  My boyfriend calls them my uniform.

I have to say, when I'm not at work or going to an event, I love J. Crew and I seem to be always running around in workout clothes.  On weekends, I'm usually in shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops.  I love casual and Chicago is the perfect city for it.  The best part about J. Crew is that they know how to do casual chic.  Not to mention, their costume jewelry is my absolute favorite!

I'm pretty laid back about my beauty regime.  My mom never let me wear much make-up as a kid and I think I still adopt that mentality.  It's really just mascara, concealer and bronzer for me.  I love Guerlain's Le 2 - essentially two mascaras in one.  I have a natural reddish complexion, so I'll use just about any bronzer.  I'm obsessed with Bobby Brown's Concealer Kit.  It's a one-stop shop fix-all!  I'm a true sucker for lip gloss.  If you open any of my handbags, you'll find many!  My favorites are YSL, Guerlain and Chanel.  But I have to say, my all-time favorite for the lips is Burt's Bees lip balm.  I think I apply it 10 times a day!

To wash the make-up off, I keep it pretty simple too.  My mom also taught me to take good care of my skin (wise woman, right?!).  I splurge on my products and switch off between Sisley and Guerlain.  A good cleanser and moisturizer for all seasons is a must.  And I love eye cream...my splurge this year was L'Or de Vie by Dior.  I think the secret though (don't laugh!) is my eye mask.  I started sleeping with an eye mask when I lived in Paris and didn't have blinds.  The sun woke me up every morning.  I swear it keeps my eyes rested and I sleep longer.  I take it with me everywhere I go.

I have to admit, I do love being bronzed, but my sensitive Croatian skin allows minimal amounts of natural sun.  Because we have so few months of warmth in Chicago, I go to Ortanic at Fitness Formula Clubs for a natural glow.  When I do get outside, I cover up with Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer.  It's the best!  And it doesn't rub off when I exercise.

Hair is something I refuse to make challenging.  I use just about any shampoo and conditioner - I love all the Dove products.  I wear my hair curly in the summer and in the the winter, I'm usually running around with it pulled back.  Blowing out my hair is something I always seek to perfect.  My ultimate pamper is my hair stylist Alyn Topper.  I'm naturally blond, so my upkeep isn't too strenuous.  But Alyn uses a technique called balayage, which keeps the hair looking very natural and it lasts longer.  I LOVE Alyn!!

My job keeps me very active and social.  And to keep up, I love to workout.  I like to mix it up; I find that the same workout routine is boring.  I try to do something different every day.  Some of my favorites are Core Power Yoga, Core Fusion at Exhale, Shred 415, All About Dance, tennis at Midtown, and Tabata with Julie Valenti at Equinox.  I retired my running shoes after two marathons, but it's hard to resist a run on the lake in the summer.  To live in Chicago, I think it's what we all long for! '

Scrub-A-Dub-Dub

Part of the reason that I wanted to include beauty insight on this blog is because I am a bit of a product junkie. I am an easy sell and every sales girl in Chicago knows it. I even know I am falling for it while it is happening, and yet I can't resist the new color, the new cream, or the new gadget. What can I say, I am in search for anything that lives up to it's reputation (most don't) and am always willing to try the new thing.

I had read a lot about the Clarisonic before going to even look at them, since I knew it was an investment and that I would probably want one immediately after talking to the salesgirl with the perfect skin. Product reviews were all positive. From super clean skin to reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, I was sold and out the door.

If you are unfamiliar with what the Clarisonic actually does, think of it as a big toothbrush for your face (It was developed by the same people that brought us the Sonicare electric toothbrush). It gently scrubs your skin while you wash your face and can be used daily or as much as you want. They come in two sizes the large original size and the smaller Mia. I went with the smaller version, the Mia, as it is slightly less expensive and is great for travel.

Washing your face with the Clarisonic feels like a mini-facial every day. It gets rid of generally everything and anything left on your face from the day. My favorite claim to fame about this gadget is that it helps your other products work better, 30% better. Because you are exfoliating every day, more of your other products soak in to your skin. Which, if you are like me you really, really want them all to work to keep the wrinkles away and stop breaking out like a shiny faced pre-teen.

The Clarisonic comes with a brush head for sensitive skin, so if you don't have sensitive skin I would suggest getting a normal brush head. They sell them alone and in packs. If you buy the large sized Clarisonic, there is a body attachment that sounds amazing, but I can't vouch for it.

Now I feel like the salesgirl, but I promise I will not share anything here that I am not obsessed with.
