The Mom Crop

With the current rebirth of 90s trends came the inevitable crop top. I remember flipping through my Delia's catalog and circling the cropped tube tops and praying my mom would let me order them (she didn't). And while I never in my wildest dreams would think that I would be entering "crop top" in any retailer search, I have been. Even at "inching towards forty" the crop top is on my radar. Not the belly button showing/strapless tube top/tighter than necessary ones of my teens, but the slightly cropped/not showing any belly/goes great with Mom jeans kind.

The cropped top and the high waisted jean are your new favorite combo, swear. With the jeans pulling you in and elongating your legs and the top in an easy fit that shows that off, you are golden.
Here are some great combos and almost all of these can be mixed and matched.
Click the number for the link!

1 & 2 This TOP! Love it and I own these jeans and they are the best white I have ever gotten.
3 & 4 A tie makes a simple white shirt special and I also own these pink jeans and worship them.
5 & 6 High waist and light wash, we really are back in the 90s in the best way. Love them with a patriotic tee.
7 & 8 J. Crew does a high crop really well and this seersucker top is perfect with it. (also in white)
9 & 10 I also own this shirt and it is the sweetest. How cute with these yellow jeans with white piping?
11. & 12 This silky tee is a great crop gateway. And I LOVE these jeans. The cut is amazing.

A Mix and Match Winter Capsule for Your Closet

After sharing a week of outfits to you all, I realized that my closet needed some holes filled (I need a pair of these and maybe this). Most importantly, interchangeable pieces that I can wear for a daytime meeting/lunch or a night out. Put together, but not fussy, and items that can be worn practically anywhere.

When I say night out, I no longer mean a "going out top" and sky high heels. Although I do enjoy that once in awhile. I mean cozy dinners with friends and date nights at our local favorite. Pulled together and interesting, but not trying too hard.

This is a true capsule where every piece fits together. I know that longevity and worth while investment is important to all of us. So here are 12 tops and 8 bottoms that could be worn with each other. I gravitated towards interesting knits with maybe a hint of skin and silky tops that can be worn loose or tucked depending on your mood. I really love the combinations and with a few of each category there could be many outfits to last well into Spring.

1. This Sezane sweater can be worn both ways and I love the bow / 2. This poncho is so chic and cozy, perfect to wear as a layering piece / 3. A v neck top with sweet bows in soft silk (other colors) / 4. I live for a silk shell. Shows off shoulders and comes in other colors  / 5. The sleeves of this gray sweater keep it interesting / 6. A nod to pajamas, this silk shirt is SO good / 7. This off the shoulder sweater is a little longer to wear with slim pants or tucked into trousers / 8. And this darling ruffle sweater is sweet as can be / 9. This is a one shoulder sweater and it looks SO great in white / 10. A cashmere crew sweater in a fun print to switch things up (also comes in solid colors) / 11. You can wear this pink silk shirt in so many ways / 12. A cashmere v neck you will wear for years (other colors)

1. Straight leg is the new skinny and this vintage look is classic / 2. An uber flattering tie waist pant to tuck any of the above in (other colors) / 3. These skinny jeans are like wearing spanx and so comfy. love the dark wash to dress it up / 4. These are J. Crew's best selling pant but with a higher waist to pull you in (other colors) / 5. A silky pull on pant that will feel like sweats, but look like suiting (other colors)WANT / 6. I swear a pink track pant goes with anything. so fun! / 7. Another classic cropped jean, but in a darker wash. I really want these / 8. A cropped knit pant that has glowing reviews. They scream cool and comfy. Also in gray

Thoughts? Any questions on how to pull these things together?
Narrowing the selection will be hard for me!

Layer Up

This winter is so strange and somehow there is no way to not think about Spring in February. Mostly because it felt like it all weekend. I know some of you are hidden under snow and wet from the endless rain as well, so thinking of warmer temps and fun Spring looks is probably welcome. The transition from Winter to Spring is usually the time when your jackets and sweaters get the most use. Here are some looks that will be perfect for those in-between times of warmth and cold and quite frankly right now.

Maternity Style

There are few things harder in life than having a baby. But what can seem almost as hard is clothing that growing bump and looking somewhat like your stylish self. And while your normal clothes can last you if they have some stretch, sometimes you have to break down and get the maternity versions. I pulled a bunch of options for a client recently that are great wardrobe staples you can wear throughout your pregnancy and that save you some money to buy clothes you really want post baby.

Tops...

1. This blouse could be worn to work with a camp underneath. Asos $50
2. A classic black blouse with flattering tucking.  Rosie Pope $44 (final sale)
3. A comfy grey sweater that goes with everything. Asos $40
4. A silky tank good for day or night. Asos $36
5. This is more of an investment, but you can wear after as well. Hatch $248
6. This top has a split back that gives it a modern feel.  Topshop $58
7. A super soft tank great alone or layering. Monrow $58
8. Stripes are surprisingly flattering when pregnant. A classic Breton is so chic. Asos $36

*note many of these tops come in other colors. Click on links to see.

Pants...
1. Paige makes the best maternity jeans. Whatever jean fit is most comfortable to you now is best for when you are pregnant. I would stick with just one pair in a dark wash.
2. Love a draped pant and these are maternity. Olian $108
3. A skinny trouser is great for work or out at night. Rosie Pope $98

Casual Dresses...
1. Not a maternity dress, but perfect for a bump and summer walks in the city. Cheap Monday $70
2. I lived in this dress when I was pregnant. Add one of your own belts to lux it up. Asos $50
3. A maxi dress is a pregnant girls best friend. This one has a nice drape for your bump. Velvet $139
4. Another dress that I lived in. As you get bigger, this will be so nice and breezy in the summer months. Asos $22
5. The drape of this dress will grow with you, go up a size. ElevenParis $95
6. Super soft and great for layering or lounging. Splendid $70

For when you want to dress up...
1. The metallic and pleats of this dress is so fun. Add in your own skinny belt to lux it up. Asos $63
2. Not sure if you like this color, but mix in nude heels and a bright clutch or necklace and this is perfect. Hatch $144
3. This would be so cute for a shower or party with a white tank. Hem to a flattering length. Asos $36
4. This has a swing shape when you are not in the mood for something tight. Hatch $219
5. Probably one of the best cocktail maternity looks I have come across. Asos $172
6. If you like a floral, this non maternity would be great. Addison $208

Dresses for day and night...

1. A white shirt dress is so chic. Invest in a slip to wear underneath. I like this brandAsos $63
2. A classic shift in a pretty color. Asos $45
3. This is non maternity, but if you go up a size can fit your bump for the first months. Madewell $138
4. Similar to the swing dress above, but add a statement necklace to dress it up. Asos $45
5. Non maternity, but roomy. Add a belt above your bump as you get bigger. Splendid $110
6. I love this. Chic but so comfortable. Add a bright bag or jewelry. Just female $136

The maternity struggle is real. I hope this helps you out.

Spring Scary: White Jeans

White jeans have always been one of those style staples that I admired from afar. I could never find a flattering enough pair to buy. I have nightmares of some of the dressing room sessions looking for these jeans. But this Spring (post baby and all), I wanted to actually find a pair that I can feel comfortable in and that flatter me. We all know denim is very personal. What works on one girl, can be horrid on another. So I can not say that I found the perfect white jean, but I have for me and they just might be for you as well.

I started by trying every single pair at Neiman Marcus. Not kidding, it was a mountain of defeat with too much overhead lighting and wondering who the hell can wear some of these cellulite highlighting, too short/too long, and usually much too thin of fabric, jeans.

Then finally, after a second and third opinion, I came across the best white jeans.

7 for all Mankind The Skinny Slim Illusion jean ($168). And while I wish my legs looked this great in them (how are they so baggy on her?!), I wanted to give you a more realistic look on my non-model, much shorter/muscular legs. Please excuse the iphone selfie situation.

I plan on getting these hemmed on the bottom so they lay flat and will look better with flats. The thing that sets this pair apart from all the others is the fabric. It is a little thicker to help not show everything and it has a great stretch. I have not bought a pair of 7s in years and I was loving whatever this "slim illusion" thing is they have going on. While I am not sure I will be rocking white jeans ever with total confidence, these certainly were worth the hunt and will help me get there.

They are available at Neimans and Shopbop

What pair have found?

Steal the Look: Karlie, Miranda & Sienna

These three ladies had my favorite looks this week. All of them are always so put together, even when it seems like they are barely trying. Though these are all very different looks, I noticed that there is very little accessories involved. No statement jewelry or stacks of bangles, just classic silhouettes and pieces perfectly matched.

Karlie's buttery dress is gorg. That is a really hard dress cut to pull off if you are not as tall and pin thin as her. A fit and flare would be more flattering on us mortals and I love that pointy toe heels are making a come back.

Parker dress, Manolo Blahnik shoes

Miranda is killing it. From the red carpet, to the airport, to lunching with her little man, she always looks amazing. I love this look because it shows you can probably throw this together with a few new pieces with what you already have. Simple, classic, with a splash of color.

T by Alexander Wang shirt, Missoni scarf, AG jeans, Marc by Marc Jacobs bag, Seychelles sandals

I love me a good floral. Girlie and femme with a bit of flirt. Sienna kept it simple with some drop earrings, soft waves in her hair, and some strappy sandals. I LOVE the Parker dress that is similar, thinking of going on a limb and ordering in my hope-to-be-again size.

J. Crew earrings, Parker dress, Alexandre Birman sandals

Which one is your favorite inspiration?

Casual Friday

While it is fun to get inspiration from our favorite ladies for dressing up, it is really dressing down that we do more often. I am constantly trying to find that perfect balance of comfort and chic. Trying to stay away from yoga pants and oversized sweaters is so hard! These three girls show us that perfect mix and how to execute it right.

Miranda is pretty flawless and I love the leather leggings with the wedge sneakers, which I am kind of getting into.

 moto jacket (obsessed) $79 / bag $1500 / leggings $130 / sunglasses $32 / sneakers $149

I always thought that Hayden was kind of cheesy, but after her chic look at the Globes and this outfit at the airport, she has won me over. The peace sign, not so much.

leather bomber $232 / fur scarf (obsessed) $188 / cropped skinnies $185 / boots $129 / hat $78

A blazer and jeans is so classic and easy to put together. You know Rachel is off doing something fab, even on a day she is dressed down.

blazer (obsessed) $130 / t-shirt (the best) $80 / jeans $218 / sunglasses $225 / satchel $165

Happy weekend loves!

Fashion Flashback with Gwyneth

My room in high school, much like every other teenage girl on the planet, had a bulletin board with current boy band crushes, notes from friends, and fantasy fashion from the red carpet. I cannot recall many of the looks from those ripped out pages from magazines, except for one.

This was when Gwyneth was still a young ingenue, attending the 1996 VMAs in a Gucci suit designed by the incomparable Tom Ford. There was something about this look that I gravitated to, and honestly still do. The way her shirt is open, but not in a vulgar way, and looks like she borrowed it from Brad is genius. Her hair looks effortless and so does her make up. Try to ignore the shoes.

And then there is the velvet suit. Velvet can go down such a bad road, especially at this time period. The height of crushed velvet, yikes. But here it comes off a bit understated, but the color is rich and vibrant.

I have loved velvet ever sense. But purely in the tailored pants and jacket capacity. Even today, seventeen years later (OMG!), I want this suit or at least to look like Gwynie here. Luckily there are some great options in updated cropped skinnies and interestingly cut jackets.

1. BDG $29 (on sale)
2. Siwy $154
3. J. Crew $80 (on sale, also comes in a pretty blush)
4. James Jeans $168
5. J. Crew $99 (on sale, comes in other colors)
6. Toi et Moi $129
7. Unconditional $395
8. Johan Earl $57

That ombre jacket is a-mazing. I also can't get over that fun update to a flight jacket. As if Ms. Paltrow could influence me anymore, she is repeating my love from her from so long ago. Ugh. I love her, and I hate her.

Red and Beige All Over

This color combination has been all over Pinterest and I am loving the bright red with the neutral beige.

The addition of a little pink clutch and a stack of silver bangles is kind of genius.

1. Audrey Long $198
3. DKNY $195
4. Arden B $44
5. Mother $147 (sale)
6. Carven $360
7. Marc Jacobs $560
8. Milly $235

Weekend Wish

Just a few things to wish for as I start my Fall shopping obsessions.

I love love love the cuffs. Chunky cuffs need to make it to my wrists while the leaves start falling. I am also not a motorcycle boot person, but I spotted these Jimmy Choo boots and pictured how much cooler I would look in leggings if these were on my feet.

Splashes of color and lots of comfort. Can't wait for Fall.

All items from Net-a-Porter
What is on your wish list for Fall?

Happy Weekend!

Jean Obsession: Mother

Taking pictures of yourself has to be the most awkward action on the planet. I do not have an in-house photographer to help me out and if you saw the make-shift tripod I set up you would think I was four. Plus, smiling into a camera and trying to pose in a flattering way just feels strange and a bit creepy when you are alone.

Regardless of all that, I took my best crack at it. Let's just say that they are not the best, but they will show you the new jeans that I may never take off my body. I was sent these from my extremely fashion savvy friend, Lacey, who works at Elyse Walker in Pacific Palisades, CA. (BTW, they are having a huge sale with most 50% off!) Although I have never been to the actual store, you can find me often browsing the ridiculously well stocked website.

Tank: J. Crew, Bra: Top Secret, Jeans: Mother, Necklace& Bracelets: vintage, Shoes: Fendi
These jeans are so soft, lightweight, and have the perfect stretch to them. The lighter wash is not something that usually flatters, but the strategic distress leans the leg out. We have been seeing so much of this extra flared leg and paired with a gauzy tank or breezy silk blouse, you will be channeling Ali McGraw in no time.

Mother makes a variety of washes and cuts. This particular style is sold out at Elyse Walker, but they have others to choose from. The above are called The Wilder in Adios to My Old Life wash. Love that. You can find them here.

Need to work on my photographer skills, pronto.
